The first game between the Alphabet (Google Deepmind) AlphaGo Program and Lee Sedol 9P will happen in Korea on March 9; that will be Tuesday, March 8 Seattle time. We plan to watch it at the Go Center with our video projector. The game starts at 8 p.m., and is expected to run 4 or 5 hours. Dennis Wheeler will be the host.

If you are on the Eastside of Lake Washington, don’t forget the Crossroads group that meets every Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. When I visited on Jan. 21, they had a full range of players, from beginners to a six dan. Everybody found a game. They are located at Crossroads Bellevue next to the giant chessboard, Uncle’s Games, and a branch of the King County Library. Our regular Wednesday Instructor will take on the topic of the day, and discuss the recent win by a computer program (Google AlphaGo) over a professional player, Fan Hui 2p. The computer won the match 5-0. The class is at 7:00 p.m. tonight, Jan. 27, 2016. The class is designed for players in the single digit kyu range (1-9 kyu), but anyone may attend, especially tonight. The class is free, and your first ten visits to the Seattle Go Center are also free. More information about the match is at the AGA website. Please join us for a gala evening of Pair Go on Saturday Dec. 12, with dessert and two rounds of play. We will be playing by International Pair Go rules, with one male and one female player on each team. The players can be any age, so a dad and daughter or mother and son can be a pair go team. This will be a dress up occasion. Fee per player: $5 for youth and voting members, $10 for others. Registration is on the evening of the tournament, from 6 – 6:45. The first round is at 7 pm, dessert is at 8:30, and the 2nd round is at 9:00 pm.

Kuma Sensei, a professional Go player from the Nihon Ki-in in Japan, will continue his visit to the Seattle Go Center with simultaneous games today, Tuesday, Oct. 6, starting at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct 7, he will give a lecture to Andrew Jackson’s Single Digit Kyu Class, starting at 7. The lecture will be recorded for distribution through YouTube. As part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, there will be no charge for the lecture.
To celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we have a big Saturday planned for Oct. 3, 2015. Our Anniversary Tournament will have a total of $500 in prizes, and will be AGA rated. The tournament will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tournament details are at the bottom of this note.
On Wednesday Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m., Andrew Jackson’s Single Digit Kyu (SDK) Class will start up for the fall. The class is free, and your first 10 visits to the Go Center are also free. Regular attendance is encouraged but not required for this class.
