Please join us for a gala evening of Pair Go on Saturday Dec. 12, with dessert and two rounds of play. We will be playing by International Pair Go rules, with one male and one female player on each team. The players can be any age, so a dad and daughter or mother and son can be a pair go team. This will be a dress up occasion. Fee per player: $5 for youth and voting members, $10 for others. Registration is on the evening of the tournament, from 6 – 6:45. The first round is at 7 pm, dessert is at 8:30, and the 2nd round is at 9:00 pm.
Our 20th Anniversary Tournament had 48 players, the largest fall tournament we have had in many years. And our evening party had over 100 attending! Kuma Sensei, a professional Go player from the Nihon Ki-in in Japan, will continue his visit to the Seattle Go Center with simultaneous games today, Tuesday, Oct. 6, starting at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct 7, he will give a lecture to Andrew Jackson’s Single Digit Kyu Class, starting at 7. The lecture will be recorded for distribution through YouTube. As part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, there will be no charge for the lecture.
To celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we have a big Saturday planned for Oct. 3, 2015. Our Anniversary Tournament will have a total of $500 in prizes, and will be AGA rated. The tournament will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tournament details are at the bottom of this note.
On Wednesday Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m., Andrew Jackson’s Single Digit Kyu (SDK) Class will start up for the fall. The class is free, and your first 10 visits to the Go Center are also free. Regular attendance is encouraged but not required for this class.
Andrew wrote his students, “It’s not too late to hit our Go goals for 2015! I’ve found a whole bunch of great problems right at the 3k-8k level that I’m excited for us to work on over the coming weeks — doing problems is one of the best ways to improve! [ Read more… ]
This is the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Our benefactor, Mr. Kaoru Iwamoto, was almost killed by this bomb. His championship game with Mr. Utaro Hashimoto was moved at the last moment to the outskirts of Hiroshima, about 10 kilometers from the center of the destruction. The blast disrupted their game, which was being played over several days, but nobody was badly hurt, so they set up again and finished the game. (Hashimoto won the game; Iwamoto eventually won the championship.) Only later did they get the terrible news as refugees came streaming from Hiroshima.
Each year, there is a beautiful memorial with floating lanterns at Green Lake, “From Hiroshima to Hope“. It will start at 6:00, south west of the Bathhouse Theater. We recommend it highly.

Our good friend Ryo Maeda 6P, and a fellow pro from the Kansai Ki-in, Koyo Hoshikawa 3P, will be visiting the Seattle Go Center next week, on their way to the Go Congress in Minnesota.
On Tuesday, July 28, they will be playing simultaneous games in the afternoon, starting at 3:00 p.m. There may be more simultaneous games in the evening, depending on how they are feeling after their long journey. The fee for a game is $10.
On Wednesday, July 29, Maeda Sensei will give a lecture at 7:00 p.m. He is one of the most popular lecturers at the US Go Congress, and we highly recommend this evening at the Go Center. [ Read more… ]
The Nihon Ki-in has organized another excellent “Training Camp” in Tokyo. The full event runs from August 21 – Sept. 3, but you may also select week-long sessions as well. Instructors include Michael Redmond, Ishida Yoshio, and Feng Shiung (“Kuma”). [ Read more… ]
